How to Download Movies Legally in India and Watch Them Offline
You can download many films legally in India, but only inside a streaming app, and only the titles the service allows. The film stays in the app, stops working after a time limit, and goes if you cancel. That is the trade-off for a legal download, and it is why it is not the same as the movie files that download sites offer.

What a legal download actually is
When a streaming service lets you download a film, it is giving you a locked copy that only its own app can play. You get it on your phone or tablet, you can watch with no internet, and it follows the service rules about time and devices.
That is very different from the files on a movie download site. Those are usually copies of someone else’s work, made without permission.
The locked copy has limits, and the limits are part of why it is allowed. Here is what the two biggest services say themselves.
Netflix
These points come from Netflix’s own help page on downloads.
Prime Video
These points come from the Prime Video usage rules. The rules differ for subscription titles, rentals and purchases.
JioHotstar and the regional apps
JioHotstar is reported to let you download some titles in its app, and one guide says Sun NXT keeps downloads for its top plan. We could not find an official help page for either, and the guides we read disagree about which plans include downloads.
So we will not guess. Open the app, find the film, and look for a download button on its page. If there is none, that film or plan does not allow it.
Whichever app you use, the same rules of thumb hold. Not every title is downloadable, and downloads do not last for ever.
If the film is for the family
Netflix notes that on a Kids profile, films with a higher maturity rating may not be available to download. If a film is missing from a child profile, that is usually why.

About the download websites
Many people searching for a film download are really looking for one of those sites. It is worth being plain about what they are.
Copying a film without permission is against copyright law in India. The copies are also often poor, the pages tend to be full of advertising that can carry unwanted software, and the sites change address every few months.

Tips that save trouble
Download on Wi-Fi, not mobile data, because a film is a large file.
Download before you travel, not at the airport. Check that it plays offline while you still have a connection.
Watch downloaded films within a few days. The time limits are short, and an expired download has to be fetched again.
Do not rely on a download as a permanent copy. If the service loses its licence, or you cancel, it can go.

Can I keep a downloaded movie if I cancel?
Netflix says cancelling your account deletes the downloads on your device. Do not count on keeping a download after you cancel any service.
Can I download a free movie?
Not on Prime Video. Its help page says free, ad-supported videos are not available for download. Rules on other services differ, so check the app.
Which streaming app is best for offline downloads in India?
We cannot rank them, because the rules differ and we could not find an official help page for JioHotstar or Sun NXT. Netflix allows up to 100 active downloads at a time on each device. Prime Video lets subscription titles be downloaded to two devices at once, with about 30 days to start watching and 48 hours to finish. For JioHotstar and Sun NXT, open the app and look for a download button on the film.
How many devices can I download a movie to?
