Jailer 2 โ Review
A fun first half and a second half that runs out of ideas. Rajinikanth carries it, and the rest is the familiar formula.
Watch it for Rajinikanth and the first half. Six critics scored Jailer 2 between 2.5 and 3.5 out of 5, and almost all of them split the film the same way: the first half is good fun, the second half lags.
It follows the same pan-India formula as the first film. Nelson Dilipkumar's comedy and Rajinikanth's swagger do the work early on. Once the villains take over, there is little new, and at two hours 45 minutes it feels long.
In cinemas from 15 October 2026 in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, with a Hindi release titled Rajini: The Jailer 2. Amazon Prime Video is reported to hold the streaming rights, but no date has been announced. We will update this line when one is.
Box office collection: โน38.95 crore net so far, after Day 1The scorecard
Story & Screenplay
2.5The same formula as before, with a thinner plot inside it.
Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is a retired jailer who just wants a quiet life. A new threat from the criminal underworld arrives and he is pulled back into his old ruthless ways to protect his family.
123telugu said the story is thin and the structure follows the first film closely, so the new villains feel less fresh. Great Andhra said the film leans on star power instead of strong writing.
Gulte went furthest and said the film completely derails in the second half, with a bland family drama and forced scenes.
Direction
3Nelson Dilipkumar gets the first half right and loses the second.
The first half is where the film works. Koimoi, Great Andhra and the Oneindia reviewer all credited Nelson's humour, and Koimoi and Great Andhra also praised the interval block.
After that the pace drops. Koimoi said the second half runs out of ideas and the tone turns into a serious revenge drama. Great Andhra called it routine and predictable.
One more thing hurts it. Great Andhra pointed out that the hero is shown as nearly invincible, which drains the tension from every villain. Gulte also faulted the editing, and 123telugu said a tighter cut would have helped.
Acting
3.5Good performances. The writing does not give most of them enough to do.
Rajinikanth is the reason to go. Every review credited his swagger and screen presence, and Koimoi singled out Ramya Krishnan as the emotional anchor.
Vidya Balan and Suraj Venjaramoodu both act well. 123telugu said Vidya handles a negative role that is a change from her usual parts, and called Suraj convincing. Great Andhra said she fits the villain well.
The complaint is about the writing, not the acting. Koimoi called her role a waste of opportunity and Gulte called the roles dud. S. J. Suryah is the same as ever. Great Andhra called it his familiar eccentric villain, and Gulte said he is getting repetitive.
Comedy & Cameos
2.5The comedy works. The cameos mostly do not.
The best part of the film is the comedy in the first half. Our own view is that the combo of Yogi Babu, Namo Narayana and Rajinikanth is a little entertaining, and it keeps the first half moving.
The critics pointed the same way. Great Andhra said Namo Narayana and Yogi Babu give the best entertainment in the first half, and 123telugu praised Namo Narayana's deadpan humour. Koimoi called the track between Suraj Venjaramoodu and Yogi Babu a massive win. 123telugu added that Namo Narayana has far less to do in the second half, and the film loses momentum without him.
The big-name cameos land less well. 123telugu said Mohanlal appears only twice, Shiva Rajkumar gets about ten minutes, and Jackie Shroff has very little to do. Koimoi said help always arrives through a cameo, which keeps the stakes low.
Gulte said the cameos are less effective than in the first film.
Camera & Visuals
3.5Handsome to look at, and rarely criticised.
Vijay Kartik Kannan's camerawork got little negative attention. Great Andhra called the cinematography top class.
It is released in IMAX as well as standard screens.
Music
3Anirudh's score lifts the action. The songs do not stay with you.
The background score was the most praised part of the music. Koimoi and Bollywood Hungama liked it, and 123telugu said the loud score works in several action scenes.
The songs are another matter. Great Andhra said they make no impact and Gulte called them forgettable. Bollywood Hungama said the item song is less memorable than the one in the first film.
What the critics said
Trisha Gaur: Rajinikanth's charisma carries it, but everything works only until the villains arrive.
A paisa vasool mass entertainer, though some developments are convenient and the villains can seem weak.
A decent watch, held up by Rajinikanth and the first-half comedy but stretched by a thin story.
Entertaining, not exciting. A fun first half and a predictable second half.
Satya: a blockbuster first half, then a second half that completely gets derailed.
Ultimately an average sequel: a solid first half, tiring villain tracks, and cameos that do not match the first film.
