The sixth Insidious film lands about where the series usually does. It has 58% on Rotten Tomatoes from more than 70 reviews, which makes it the second best-reviewed film in the series after the 2010 original. That is a decent result this far in, and it is still a split one.
Critics agree it delivers scares efficiently and that the new lead gives it a fresh centre. They disagree on whether the film does anything with that. The positive reviews call it a real reset. The negative ones call it well made and empty.

In cinemas. Blumhouse films usually reach digital rental in six to eight weeks. No India date confirmed yet.

Story & Screenplay
2.5/5A decent new idea that falls back on old habits in the second half.
Amelia Eve plays a dental hygienist who can pull objects and creatures between our world and the Further, which makes her a target for whatever lives there. It is a better hook than the series has had in years.
The problem is what the film does with it. The first half builds real tension. The ending reaches for the same beats the series has already used five times, so it becomes predictable exactly when it should be getting bigger.
Direction
2.5/5Jacob Chase builds tension well, then leans on jump scares more than he needs to.
Chase is good at the slow build. Several critics noted the film wastes no time and creates real dread early on. Even the harsher reviews admit there is skill in how it is put together.
The jump scares are the recurring complaint. Where the film trusts atmosphere it works. Where it goes for a loud bang it feels generic, and there is more of the second than the first.
Acting
3/5Amelia Eve is a real asset and carries most of the film alone.
Eve keeps the film grounded. Handing a long-running series to a new lead is usually where these reboots fail, and reviews agree she is not the problem.
The other roles are much thinner. Without the Lambert family at the centre, the film leans almost entirely on one performance, and there is not much around her when the script gives her nothing to play against.
Camera & Visuals
3/5The Further still looks good. The scare style has not changed since 2010.
The series look still works — washed-out colours, figures held just out of focus. The film is well made throughout.
What it is not is new. Critics who found it un-scary pointed at exactly this. The images are familiar enough that regular horror viewers can see each scare coming.
Audience Reaction

Audience response has been better than the reviews, which is normal for Insidious and for Blumhouse films generally. As a Friday night scare, it does the job.
The Rotten Tomatoes score is worth reading carefully. It opened at 64% from 39 reviews and settled at 58% as more came in, so the later reviews were more negative than the first wave.
